Sugar Loaf:

A Historical Gem of Green Lake, Wisconsin

Sugar Loaf, a striking peninsula on the northern shore of Green Lake—Wisconsin’s deepest inland lake—offers a captivating blend of natural beauty and rich history. Known to the Ho-Chunk Nation as Įnį́bosarajᵋra ("The Stone that Stands Erect"), this promontory was revered as part of the sacred Daycholah (Green Lake), guarded by a mythical Waterspirit. Ho-Chunk legends tell of an enchanted island nearby and a “Great Lizard” sentinel, Wau-ke-pon, watching from the bluff. Ancient earthworks, including a 44-foot panther effigy mound and a conical burial mound, crown Sugar Loaf, linking visitors to its indigenous past.

Geologically, Sugar Loaf’s bluff was carved by a pre-glacial river and shaped by the Wisconsin glaciation, forming Green Lake’s 237-foot-deep basin. By the 1830s, European settlers arrived, with pioneers like Anson Dart damming the lake to spur development. By the late 1800s, Sugar Loaf became a coveted spot for summer homes, cementing its place in Green Lake’s history.

Today, Sugar Loaf’s scenic shores and historical significance make it a must-visit destination, offering a glimpse into the Ho-Chunk legacy and the geological forces that shaped this serene landscape.
